ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น : ผึ้งช่างไม้จิ๋วมรกตมีการกระจายพันธุ์ในแถบเอเชียตะวันออก (Oriental region) เป็นวงกว้าง ในประเทศไทยมีการกระจายพันธุ์อยู่ทุกภูมิภาค มีการดำรงชีวิตแบบโดดเดี่ยวอาศัยและทำรังในไม้เนื้ออ่อนที่ตายแล้ว ในอดีตมีรายงานถึงการใช้ผึ้งชนิดนี้เพื่อเป็นแมลงผสมเกสรทางเลือกให้กับถั่ว alfalfa (Medico sativa) ทางตอนใต้ของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา และในปี พ.ศ. 2556 มีการศึกษาที่ยืนยันว่าผึ้งชนิดนี้เป็นแมลงผสมเกสรที่สำคัญของกล้วยไม้พื้นถิ่นของเมืองไทยอย่าง เอื้องศรีอาคเนย์ (Sirindhornia monophylla) ซึ่งเป็นกล้วยไม้หายากที่ขึ้นตามบริเวณเขาหินปูนในจังหวัดตากเท่านั้น นอกจากนี้ยังมีการศึกษาที่สาธารณรัฐอิสลามปากีสถานเกี่ยวกับศักยภาพการผสมเกสร พบว่าผึ้งช่างไม้จิ๋วมรกตมีศักยภาพการเป็นแมลงผสมเกสรทางเลือกให้กับพืชตระกูลถั่วและแตงในการเกษตร
ลักษณะเด่น : เป็นผึ้งที่มีลำตัวมีขนาดเล็กและมีสีเขียวมรกต สะท้อนแสงชัดเจน บริเวณผิวตามลำตัวเป็นหลุมขรุขระ บริเวณแผ่นปิดเหนือปาก (clypeus) มีลักษณะคล้ายกับตัว T หัวกลับ และมีรอยแต้มสีขาวครีมรูปร่างคล้ายกับพัดหัวกลับปรากฏ โดยสามารถจัดจำแนกผึ้งชนิดนี้ออกจากผึ้งสกุลย่อย Pithitis ชนิดอื่นได้จากลักษณะของแถบสีดำ (black velvety) ที่ปล้องท้องที่ 4–6 ของผึ้งเพศผู้
